This tier list ranks the free game launchers by library size, store quality, technical performance, and overall value to a PC gamer in 2026.
S tier — install on day one
Steam
Steam is the default PC gaming launcher, and the 2026 version is the best it's ever been:
- Library size — 50,000+ games, the largest of any launcher.
- Steam Deck compatibility — every game on Steam is rated for Steam Deck playability. The rating is honest.
- Workshop support — the modding ecosystem is unmatched. Skyrim, Fallout, and Dota 2 all have thriving Workshop communities.
- Sales — the seasonal sales are still the best in the industry.
- SteamOS — the Steam Deck's operating system is based on Linux, which means Steam is the most Linux-friendly launcher.
The downsides are minor: the chat system is still clunky, the store can be overwhelming, and the review system is increasingly gamed. But the core product is the best in the business.
Epic Games Store
Epic is the dark horse of the launcher landscape. The store has spent the last 5 years building a competitive alternative to Steam:
- Free games — Epic gives away 1-2 free games every week. The free games are often high-quality titles (Control, Civilization VI, GTA V).
- Exclusive deals — Epic has funded several major exclusives, including Alan Wake 2, Hades, and Kena: Bridge of Spirits.

- Cross-platform play — Epic Online Services provides cross-platform play, achievements, and matchmaking for games that opt in.
The downsides: the store is less feature-rich than Steam, the social features are weaker, and the launcher itself is heavier than it needs to be. But the free games and the developer-friendly cut make it a must-install.
A tier — install if you play the games
GOG Galaxy
GOG is the DRM-free launcher owned by CD Projekt. The 2026 version is the best for classic games:
- DRM-free — every game on GOG is DRM-free. You own the game files outright.
- Classic game catalog — GOG has the best catalog of classic games, with DOSBox and DOSBox Staging integration.
- GOG Galaxy — the unified launcher pulls games from other launchers (Steam, Epic, etc.) into a single library view.

The downsides: the catalog is smaller than Steam or Epic, the new releases are limited, and the Galaxy client is more resource-heavy than the simpler alternatives. But for classic game fans, GOG is unmatched.
Battle.net
Battle.net is the Blizzard launcher, and the 2026 version is the best for Blizzard/Activision games:
- World of Warcraft — the only way to play WoW.
- Diablo IV — the only way to play Diablo IV.
- Overwatch 2 — the only way to play Overwatch 2.
- Call of Duty — the only way to play Call of Duty (the console versions use a different launcher).

B tier — niche or specialized
Riot Client
The Riot Client is the launcher for Riot's games:

- Teamfight Tactics — the only way to play TFT.
- Legends of Runeterra — the only way to play LoR.
The Riot Client is the lightest launcher in this tier list. The install is small, the client is fast, and the games run well. The downside: the launcher is Riot-specific, so it doesn't help with any other game.
Rockstar Launcher
The Rockstar Launcher is the launcher for Rockstar games:

The Warframe launcher is the simplest launcher in this tier list. The install is small, the client is fast, and the game runs well. The downside: it's only useful for Warframe.
The launchers you can skip
There are a few launchers that you can skip in 2026:
- Bethesda.net — the launcher was deprecated in 2024. Bethesda games are now on Steam.
- Origin — the launcher was deprecated in 2023. EA games are now on the EA App.
- Uplay — the launcher was renamed to Ubisoft Connect in 2022. Most Ubisoft games are on Steam.
