Dota 2 ranked climb guide, 2026 edition

Climbing the Dota 2 ranked ladder in 2026 is harder than it was in 2024. The medal system changes, the role queue rules, and the calibration math all changed in the last two years. This guide is designed to help you climb efficiently, regardless of your role or starting medal.

The guide is broken into three sections:

  1. The system — how medals, MMR, and calibration actually work.
  2. The habits — the three practices that separate the rankeds from the climbers.
  3. The role — role-specific advice for the five positions.

The system: medals, MMR, and calibration

The medal system (2026)

Dota 2 uses a medal system that maps to a hidden MMR number. The medal ladder in 2026:

  • Herald — 0 to 1,500 MMR (entry-level)
  • Guardian — 1,500 to 2,500
  • Crusader — 2,500 to 3,500
  • Archon — 3,500 to 4,200
  • Legend — 4,200 to 5,000
  • Ancient — 5,000 to 5,700
  • Divine — 5,700 to 6,500
  • Immortal — 6,500+ (top 1% of players)

The numbers shift slightly every 6 months as the average MMR rises. The 2026 numbers above are the current brackets.

Calibration

Calibration is the process of placing your initial medal. New accounts calibrate over 10 games. Returning players (after 3+ months away) re-calibrate over 5 games.

Calibration math:

  • Each game is worth between +50 and -50 MMR, depending on the opposing team's average MMR.
  • Calibration games are weighted 2x — a win counts as +100, a loss as -100.
  • The system uses a Bayesian approach: it weighs your calibration games against your unranked match history.

The key insight: the system trusts your recent games more than your old games. If you've been winning in unranked, calibration will be generous. If you've been losing, calibration will be harsh.

Role queue

Dota 2 uses role queue. When you queue, you pick 1-5 roles in order of preference. The system assigns you to a role and a lane:

  • Position 1 (Safe lane, carry) — the team's late-game damage dealer.
  • Position 2 (Mid lane) — the solo mid player, often the playmaker.
  • Position 3 (Off lane) — the solo offlane, often initiator.
  • Position 4 (Soft support) — the roaming support, often a playmaker.
  • Position 5 (Hard support) — the babysitter, often the lowest farm priority.

You can pick your primary role and 1-4 secondary roles. The system tries to assign you to your primary role, but if the queue is long, you'll be assigned to a secondary.

Pro tip: pick a primary role and one secondary, not all five. The system matches faster when it has fewer constraints to satisfy.

The habits: three practices that work

1. Watch the minimap every 5 seconds

This is the single biggest differentiator between the rankeds and the climbers. The minimap shows the position of every hero on the map. If you check it every 5 seconds, you avoid 80% of ganks.

The habit:

  • Glance at the minimap after every last-hit.
  • Glance at the minimap before every ability use.
  • Glance at the minimap during every death timer.

The cost: a fraction of a second of attention. The benefit: avoiding deaths that cost 300+ gold.

2. Communicate, but don't tilt

Dota 2 has a ping system and a chat system. The ping system is the right tool for 80% of communication. Use it for:

  • Danger — when an enemy is missing from the lane.
  • On my way — when you're rotating to help.
  • Push / Defend — when you want the team to push or defend an objective.
  • Retreat — when you want the team to back off.

The chat system is for after-game analysis and the rare "let's coordinate a smoke gank" call. Don't use it for flame or blame. The fastest way to lose a game is to tilt a teammate.

3. Review your deaths

After every death, ask three questions:

  1. Could I have prevented the death? (positioning, vision, itemization)
  2. Did I have the right items to survive? (force staff, glimmer cape, BKB)
  3. What can I do differently next time?

The habit: every game, write down 2-3 deaths and what you'd do differently. After 20 games, you'll have 40-60 notes. The patterns are obvious.

The role: position-specific advice

Position 1 (Carry)

The carry's job is to farm efficiently and show up to team fights with items. The habits:

  • Last-hit every creep in lane. Even under tower, you can last-hit with practice.
  • Don't fight before level 6 unless the support is helping.
  • Show up to every team fight after level 6. The carry's job is to deal damage, not to avoid fights.

Position 2 (Mid)

The mid's job is to win the lane and roam. The habits:

  • Win the first 5 last-hits. The first 5 last-hits determine who wins the lane.
  • Buy a TP scroll on every back. The mid's job is to TP to counter-initiations.
  • Roam after level 6 if your lane is won. The mid is the playmaker.

Position 3 (Offlane)

The offlane's job is to survive and initiate. The habits:

  • Don't feed the carry. The offlane's job is to take pressure off the carry, not to give kills to the enemy carry.
  • Build utility items first. Vanguard, Crimson Guard, Pipe of Insight. The offlane is the team's tank.
  • Initiate from the front. The offlane is the first to walk into the fight.

Position 4 (Soft support)

The soft support's job is to make plays. The habits:

  • Stack camps at 0:53. The soft support is the team's playmaker, and stacking camps is the first play.
  • Buy a TP scroll on every back. The soft support is the team's counter-initiator.
  • Wards win games. Place deep wards in the enemy jungle after level 6.

Position 5 (Hard support)

The hard support's job is to enable the carry. The habits:

  • Don't take CS. The hard support's job is to deny the enemy carry, not to farm.
  • Buy a TP scroll on every back. The hard support is the team's babysitter.
  • Place observer wards in the safe lane triangle and the mid lane rune spots.

The climb in 3 steps

If you're stuck at a medal and want to climb, follow these three steps:

  1. Pick a primary role and stick with it. Playing 2-3 heroes in one role is the fastest way to climb.
  2. Play 3-5 games per day, not more. Consistency matters more than volume.
  3. Review your last 5 deaths after every game. The patterns are obvious after 20 games.

The climb is a marathon, not a sprint. The players who reach Immortal are the players who play consistently for 6+ months, not the players who grind 20 games a day for a week.
