League of Legends item builds guide, 2026 edition

Item builds in League of Legends are the difference between a Plat player and a Diamond player. The game's item system has 200+ items, 5 roles, and dozens of champions per role. Mastering the item system takes hundreds of hours. This guide is designed to give you the foundational builds that will start your climb to the next rank.

The guide is broken into three sections:

  1. The roles — the optimal item path for every role.
  2. The situational picks — the items that win specific matchups.
  3. The mistakes — the common build errors that cost you LP.

The roles: optimal item path

Top lane

The top lane is the most role-flexible in LoL. The optimal item path depends on your champion:

The situational picks: items that win specific matchups

The 2026 meta has several situational items that win specific matchups:

  • Edge of Night — the anti-assassin item. Shield every 40 seconds. Buy against Zed, Talon, Kha'Zix.
  • Death's Dance — the anti-burst item. 30% damage reduction over 3 seconds. Buy against full-burst comps.
  • Spirit Visage — the anti-magic item. 10% bonus healing, 100% magic resist. Buy against heavy AP comps.
  • Thornmail — the anti-heal item. 100% grievous wounds. Buy against Soraka, Vladimir, Aatrox.
  • Maw of Malmortius — the anti-magic shield. Shield equal to 30% of max HP. Buy against Veigar, Syndra, LeBlanc.
  • Quicksilver Sash — the anti-CC item. Removes all CC. Buy against Ashe, Morgana, Varus.

The situational items are what separate the rankeds from the climbers. The optimal build depends on the enemy team composition, not just the champion.

The mistakes: 5 errors that cost you LP

1. Not buying boots first

The most common build mistake is not buying boots first. Boots are the most gold-efficient item in the game:

  • Tier 2 boots give you 25-50 movement speed for 800-1100 gold.
  • The first 5 minutes of the game are the most important for roaming.
  • Roaming without boots is a trap. You're slow, you miss ganks, you die.

2. Buying the wrong component first

The second most common build mistake is buying the wrong component first. The optimal first component depends on the matchup:

  • AP matchup: buy the AP component first (e.g., Fiendish Codex for mages).
  • AD matchup: buy the armor component first (e.g., Cloth Armor for bruisers).
  • Sustain matchup: buy the sustain component first (e.g., Vampiric Scepter for ADCs).

3. Not buying the situational item

The third most common build mistake is not buying the situational item. The situational items are what win specific matchups:

  • Edge of Night against assassins.
  • Spirit Visage against heavy AP.
  • Thornmail against heavy healing.

If the enemy team has 2+ assassins, you need Edge of Night. If the enemy team has 3+ AP, you need Spirit Visage. If the enemy team has 2+ healers, you need Thornmail.

4. Buying the wrong boots

The fourth most common build mistake is buying the wrong boots:

  • Plated Steelcaps for AD-heavy matchups.
  • Mercury's Treads for AP-heavy or CC-heavy matchups.
  • Ionian Boots of Lucidity for ability-haste-dependent champions.
  • Berserker's Greaves for auto-attack-dependent champions.
  • Sorcerer's Shoes for AP mages.

5. Not stacking the right stats

The fifth most common build mistake is not stacking the right stats. The optimal stat distribution depends on the role:

  • Tanks: HP > armor > magic resist.
  • Bruisers: AD > HP > armor.
  • Mages: AP > magic penetration > mana.
  • ADCs: AD > attack speed > crit chance.
  • Supports: ability haste > heal/shield power > HP.

The climb in 3 steps

If you're stuck at a rank and want to climb, follow these three steps:

  1. Memorize one optimal build per champion. Use the recommended builds from probuilds.net or op.gg.
  2. Buy boots first, always. The boots are the most gold-efficient item in the game.
  3. Buy the situational item. The situational items are what win specific matchups.

The climb is a marathon, not a sprint. The players who reach Diamond are the players who play consistently for 6+ months, not the players who grind 20 games a day for a week.
