Genshin Impact 5.9 livestream recap — new region, two new characters, and the next archon quest
HoYoverse reveals Genshin Impact 5.9 with a new sub-region, two new 5-star characters, and the next archon quest chapter. Here's what's worth saving your Primogems for.

5.9 livestream recap
HoYoverse's 5.9 special program aired this weekend, and the reveals are the biggest since the 5.0 archon quest cycle. The new patch brings a new sub-region, two 5-star characters, and a major archon quest chapter that closes out the current storyline.
New sub-region: Khaenri'ah Outskirts
The 5.9 patch opens the edges of Khaenri'ah, the underground civilization that's been teased since the game's launch. The full region is reserved for a future major update, but the outskirts give players a taste:
- Two new domains with lore that fills in pre-cataclysm history.
- One new world boss (the Scribe of the Hollow Sky) with a unique mechanic around the new character kits.
- Three new exploration mechanics — a memory fragment system that lets you replay key historical events, a void energy system that changes how some enemies behave, and a new set of puzzles tied to the region's "absence of elements" lore.
If you've been waiting for Khaenri'ah content, this is your patch. The full region drops in a future update, but the outskirts give you enough new ground to explore for a month.
New characters
Two new 5-stars headline the patch:
- Scribe (5-star Dendro, Polearm) — a support character designed around the new memory fragment system. Her kit buffs Dendro reactions and creates a damage-amp field tied to the new mechanic.
- Aether Echo (5-star Anemo, Catalyst) — actually a new variant of the Traveler's sibling. Available via a limited event that's gated behind the new archon quest, not the banner.
The Aether Echo story character is a first for Genshin. The pattern is closer to Honkai: Star Rail's story-locked characters than the standard 5-star banner format.
Archon quest chapter
The 5.9 archon quest is the second-to-last chapter in the Sumeru-Fontainian-Natlan-Snezhnaya arc. The 5.9 finale sets up the Snezhnaya arc, which is the next major storyline. Expect:
- A 6-hour main quest that closes the current arc.
- Two new playable characters unlocked through the quest (only one is the Aether Echo).
- A new weekly boss that drops the materials for both new characters.
If you've been putting off the archon quest, this is the patch to catch up. The quest chain has been building since 4.0, and the 5.9 chapter is the setup for the next major arc.
Primogem budget
The 5.9 patch is a heavy Primogem spend. If you're saving for one or both new characters plus the weapon banner, you need ~300 pulls budgeted.
A typical F2P player with all exploration done gets ~80 pulls per patch from events and dailies. That means you need to either:
- Skip one banner to save for 5.9.
- Pull on the standard banner and hope for an off-banner 5-star.
- Spend.
The good news: the 5.9 livestream confirmed a 10-pull discount on the first multi-pull of the patch, so if you're at 70+ pity, you can guarantee the new character with 20-30 pulls saved.
