The new format in detail
Play-In → Swiss
The 2025 Play-In was a 4-team double-elimination bracket. The 2026 format uses a 5-round Swiss stage for all 20 teams. Teams that go 3-0, 3-1, or 3-2 advance to the knockout stage. Teams that go 0-3, 1-3, or 2-3 are eliminated.
The Swiss stage runs from October 14-19, with 4 matches per day across two stages.
Knockout → 8 teams, single elimination
The top 8 teams from Swiss advance to the knockout stage. The knockout is single elimination, with the quarterfinals on October 22-23, the semifinals on October 25, and the final on October 26.
Fearless Draft — now applies to knockout
In 2025, Fearless Draft was only used in the final. In 2026, it applies to every knockout game. Once a team picks a champion, they can't pick it again in the series. This is a major change for series strategy — the depth of a team's champion pool is now critical.
Multi-region final
The final is the most ambitious broadcast Riot has ever attempted. The final plays out across three regions (Los Angeles, Berlin, Shanghai) in a 72-hour marathon. Each region gets one map of the final, and the broadcast rotates between them.
The multi-region final is a logistical nightmare, but Riot is betting that it'll drive a 30-40% viewership increase over the 2025 final.
