Apex Legends Season 23: From the Ashes

Respawn's mid-year season drop. New legend, new map, ranked rework that finally brings the algorithm into the cross-progression era. The Newcastle-Horizon TTK rebalance is the most-requested community change of the past two seasons.

Highlights

  • New legend: Vesper. Defensive recon support with a

gravity-lift tactical that lifts allies and slows enemies in a 5m column. Passive: teammate shields refresh 25% faster when within 20m. The community response to Vesper's reveal trailer has been strongly positive; she has the highest pre-season pickrate since Valkyrie in S19.

  • New map: "Skybridge". A long vertical map — three

main tiers connected by two gravity lifts, with the standard ring-collapse pulling from the top down. The "high ground" meta returns to the Apex meta-game in a way it hasn't since World's Edge. Skirmisher spawns are below; ring control is mid.

  • Ranked rework. The "wait out the season and decay"

playstyle is finally gone: rank decay is capped at one tier per 7 days, and "Diamond+" is now correctly treated as a plateau rank — staying at Diamond is the same reward as reaching Diamond, no longer a punishment for not pushing to Master.

Legend balance

  • Newcastle — base cooldown on Mobile Shield reduced

from 28s to 22s. Shield HP unchanged. The legend has been bottom-tier in pro play for three seasons; this is the buff the community has been asking for.

  • Horizon — Gravity Lift cooldown reduced from 30s to

24s. The lift radius increased from 9m to 12m. The community concern was that Horizon's "vertical control" niche was fully absorbed by Vesper's release; Respawn chose to buff Horizon into a more aggressive role rather than nerf Vesper.

  • Wraith — Into the Void cooldown reduced from 25s to

20s. The risk-vs-reward nerf from S21 is being walked back slightly; Wraith is "strong" in mid-rank but not "must-pick" in pro.

  • Newcastle / Horizon rebalance note: the TTK (time-to-

kill) on these two legends is now approximately equal to the season average, which was the explicit goal. The community TTK dashboard should show this within 48 hours of the patch going live.

Ranked season

  • Soft-reset is unchanged: everyone drops ~1 tier at season

start, with a soft floor at Diamond IV.

  • The "Master" rank now requires only 2,500 RP (was 3,000).

The Pred floor is now 9,500 RP (was 10,000). The "PRED-ELO grind" community has been asking for this for two seasons; Respawn has been quiet about the specific math but the numbers move the Pred population back to "exclusive club" rather than "every Diamond+.

  • The ranked badge now persists across platform changes.

Previously, switching from PC to console would reset your ranked badge; now it carries over. (This was technically already true; the patch just fixes an edge case where players who changed cross-play settings mid-season had their badge reset.)

Audio / visual

  • The wingman-callout voice line for the new legend is

recast; the previous trailer used a temp actor.

  • Map audio now correctly mixes squad-footsteps when multiple

squads are stacked in a small area (the previous build had a "squad footstep ducking" bug that suppressed one squad's audio in close quarters).

  • The Hit-Marker visual effect is now 8% larger. Subjective,

but the community had been asking for this since S20.

Known issues

  • The new "Skybridge" map has a collision bug on the

upper-east ramp; the upper ramp clips into the wall geometry by 1.5m at certain camera angles. Will be fixed in next week's hotfix.

  • Ranked badge carries over across platforms, but the

loading-screen tip about cross-progression is not yet localized for some languages. Will be in next patch.

What Respawn is signalling

Season 23 is the third of four seasons in the 2026 ranked roadmap. The community has been reading the season cadence as a sign of stability — Respawn's year-over-year concurrent-user-count has been holding around 1.2M peak, which is up from a S21 dip. The S24 finale (planned for late September 2026) is reportedly a "legacy event" — Respawn has hinted that one of the original six legends will be reworked for the first time since launch.
