Fortnite review: the cultural phenomenon that's still on top

The verdict

Fortnite is still the most-played free-to-play game in the world, seven years after launch. Zero Build mode made it accessible to everyone, the live events are unmatched in the industry, and the cosmetic economy keeps the game fresh every season. The original build mode is harder than it looks, and the item shop is aggressive, but if you want a free battle royale with a massive player base and constant content, Fortnite is the answer.

What works

The player base is unmatched. Fortnite has 200-400 million monthly active players depending on the season. Matchmaking is instant at every rank, every platform, every region. If you want a competitive game where you'll always find a match in under 30 seconds, Fortnite is it. The cross-play with PC, console, and mobile means you can play with friends on any platform.

Zero Build mode is the secret weapon. The 2022 removal of the build mechanic opened Fortnite to players who'd never touch the build meta. Zero Build is a more accessible, more tactical mode where positioning and aim matter more than building. It's now the more popular mode, and it has its own competitive scene and ranked ladder.

Live events are cultural moments. The Travis Scott concert in 2020 drew 12.3 million concurrent players. The Juice WRLD event, the Big Bang event, the Eminem concert — these are moments that transcend gaming. Fortnite is the only game where you can drop in for a 10-minute concert with 20 million other people and have it be a shared cultural moment.

The content cadence is relentless. New seasons every 2-3 months, each with a new battle pass, new map changes, new weapons, new items, new live events. The game is always changing. Boredom is structurally impossible — there's always a new season around the corner.

What doesn't

The item shop is aggressive. Fortnite sells cosmetics for $5-20 each, with daily rotations and "exclusive" items that come back every 6+ months. The constant FOMO ("this is the last time this skin will be available") is a deliberate monetization strategy. It's cosmetic-only, but the marketing pressure is real. The battle pass is fair, but the item shop is where Epic makes its real money.

Build mode is brutal for new players. The original Fortnite is still the mode for competitive play, but the skill curve for building under pressure is steep. The top 1% of build players can box-fight at 200 APM, and the gap between a new player and a Diamond-ranked player is enormous. Zero Build sidesteps this, but competitive Fortnite is still build-based.

The story content has thinned. The original Chapter 1 had a legitimate narrative with the Visitor, the Seven, the Zero Point. The post-Chapter 2 era has been more episodic and less coherent. Players who loved the lore are frustrated. Epic's focus has shifted to collabs and live events over the long-form story.

Should you play it?

Yes — especially Zero Build. The game is free, the player base is massive, and the live events are uniquely Fortnite. If you want a casual battle royale you can play with friends, Zero Build is perfect. If you want competitive depth, the ranked build mode is there. The item shop is aggressive but cosmetic-only, so there's zero pay-to-win.

Score: 8/10 — Recommended.
