Honkai: Star Rail review: the turn-based RPG that beat its own sibling

The verdict

Honkai: Star Rail is the best turn-based RPG you can play for free — and arguably the best game HoYoverse has ever shipped. It took Genshin's production values, swapped the action combat for a refined turn-based system, and made everything more generous and more respectful of your time.

What works

The combat is a masterclass in turn-based design. Break mechanics, speed tuning, and team synergy create a puzzle that's easy to learn and hard to master. Auto-battle handles the grind, so your attention goes where it matters: boss fights and endgame modes.

The story is the best HoYoverse has written. Penacony's dream-world narrative is genuinely surprising, with characters that earn their moments. The writing is tighter and the pacing better than Genshin's sprawling epic.

The gacha is more forgiving. You get more pulls per patch than Genshin, the 50/50 system works the same way, and free characters like Trailblazer and Natasha are genuinely useful. F2P players can clear every piece of content.

What doesn't

Between patches, the endgame thins out. Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction are the only real challenges, and once you clear them there's little to do but farm relics. It's a game that rewards 30 minutes a day, not 4-hour sessions.

Trailblaze Power (stamina) gates your farming, same as Genshin's resin. It's less punishing, but it's still there.

Should you play it?

If you like turn-based combat, gorgeous presentation, and a story worth following, Star Rail is a must-play. It's the most accessible entry point to HoYoverse's games — easier than Genshin, more generous, and just as polished.
