Valorant review: the tactical shooter that earned its crown

The verdict

Valorant is the best tactical shooter you can play for free. Riot took the CS formula, added agent abilities that reward brain over brawn, and wrapped it in the most effective anti-cheat in the genre. Five years in, it's the competitive FPS benchmark.

What works

The gunplay is the foundation, and it's rock solid. Rifles have distinct spray patterns, movement matters, and one-taps feel earned. It's the kind of aim-driven combat where improvement is measurable and satisfying.

Agent abilities are the differentiator. Unlike hero shooters where abilities are the main event, Valorant's abilities are utility — smokes, flashes, recon. They create information asymmetry and set up plays, but the gun still decides the round. Jett's dash creates space, Sova's arrow reveals positions, Omen's smoke blocks sightlines. None of them shoot for you.

Vanguard, Riot's kernel-level anti-cheat, is controversial but effective. Cheaters are genuinely rare in Valorant, which is more than you can say for most F2P shooters. The ranked ladder is competitive at every tier.

What doesn't

The learning curve is a wall. If you're new to tactical shooters, expect to die a lot before you get your first kill. The game doesn't hold your hand, and the community has little patience for learning players in ranked.

Cosmetics are expensive. Weapon skins run $20-50, and the battle pass, while decent, is a grind. It's cosmetic-only, but the price tags sting.

Should you play it?

If you want a competitive FPS where skill genuinely matters, Valorant is the answer. It's free, it's fair, and the ceiling is infinite. Just bring patience for the first 50 hours.
