A hero shooter with great design but a dead ranked queue caps at B. A hero shooter with a great population but uninteresting heroes caps at B. S-tier requires all four.
S-Tier: the genre-defining hero shooters
Overwatch 2
The game that started the genre. The 2026 version has 42 heroes across 3 roles (Tank, Damage, Support), 22 maps across 6 modes, and the new Stadium mode that overhauls the gameplay loop.
The 2026 season 18 update overhauled the Stadium mode and added hero bans to ranked. The meta is healthier than it's been in years — the Tank role is finally balanced, and the Stadium mode gives players a third way to play.
The catch: the Overwatch 2 progression system is still heavily monetization-driven. Buying the battle pass is almost required to unlock new heroes at a reasonable pace. The F2P experience is workable but slow.
Marvel Rivals
NetEase's 6v6 hero shooter that took the genre by storm in 2025. The 2026 version has 38 heroes from across the Marvel universe, a 6v6 main mode, and a ranked ladder that runs from Bronze to Eternity.
The 2026 Season 3 "Empire of Eternal Night" update added Doctor Doom and Clea, a new 6v6 mode (Doom's Domain), a new map (Castle Doom), and a new ranked tier. The hero design is the best in the genre — every hero plays like a love letter to their comics counterpart.
The catch: the anti-cheat is weaker than Overwatch's, and the ranked ladder can have smurf issues. The F2P experience is generous — you can unlock every hero through gameplay.
A-Tier: excellent with caveats
Paladins
Hi-Rez Studios' older hero shooter. The 2026 version has 55+ champions across 4 roles, 25+ maps, and a Siege mode that's the most strategic in the genre.
The 2026 update added a new champion, two new maps, and a reworked ranked ladder. The hero design is solid — every champion has a clear role and a fun ultimate.
The catch: the population is smaller than Overwatch or Marvel Rivals. The F2P model is generous (everything unlockable through play), but the visual polish is below the S-tier.
B-Tier: solid with caveats
Fragpunk
The new contender in the hero shooter space. The 2026 version has 20+ heroes, a card-based ability system, and a fast-paced 5v5 mode. The art style is striking, and the hero design is creative.
The catch: the population is still building, and the ranked ladder can have long queue times outside of peak hours. The F2P model is fair, but the game's long-term direction is unclear.
C-Tier: niche or aging
The Division Resurgence
The mobile port of The Division. The 2026 version has 8+ specializations, a PvPvE mode, and a story campaign. The hero design is light (the "heroes" are more like builds), but the gunplay is solid.
The catch: this is a mobile game, and the population is small. The PvP is fun in bursts but not a long-term engagement. Worth trying if you want a Division-style experience on mobile.
