Four criteria, weighted equally:
- Core gunplay — Is aiming satisfying? Do weapons feel distinct?
- Game modes & replayability — Are there enough modes to keep things fresh?
- Fair monetization — Can a free player compete? Anything pay-to-win?
- Population & matchmaking — Are there enough players to find matches at your rank?
A shooter with great gunplay but a dead ranked queue caps at B. A shooter with great population but bad aim feel caps at C. S-tier requires all four.
S-Tier: the genre-defining competitive shooters
Valorant
Riot's tactical FPS combines CS-grade gunplay with agent abilities that reward brain over brawn. Vanguard anti-cheat is controversial but effective — cheaters are genuinely rare. Ranked is competitive at every tier, esports is thriving, and the cosmetic store is expansive without ever being pay-to-win. The standard for the genre.
Counter-Strike 2
Valve's update to the 25-year-old franchise brought volumetric smokes and subtick timing. The free-to-play switch in 2023 lowered the entry barrier (though Prime status at $14.95 is the real paywall). CS2 is the most disciplined ranked ladder in gaming and the most-watched esport. Buy Prime on day one; you'll be hooked in 100 hours.
Apex Legends
Five years in, Apex is still the movement king of the battle royale genre. Sliding, wall-running, and 25+ legends with distinct kits keep every fight interesting. Cross-progression finally works across all platforms. Smurfing and cheaters on PC are the main complaints, but the core game is excellent. The best F2P BR.
A-Tier: excellent with minor flaws
Overwatch
The polished hero shooter that started the genre. The shift to F2P brought a worse monetization model and slower hero releases, but the core gameplay — 5v5 objective-based combat with 40+ heroes — is still outstanding. The PvE missions are an underrated addition. Great, but a step behind its peak.
Marvel Rivals
NetEase's hero shooter is the freshest take on the genre in years. 6v6 with destructible environments, hero team-ups, and a roster of 35+ Marvel characters. Balance swings hard between seasons, but the core combat is fast and fun. The Overwatch alternative that actually delivered.
Fortnite
Epic's cultural phenomenon is in its seventh year and still dominant. Zero Build mode made it accessible to non-builders, the constant live events keep players coming back, and the cosmetic economy is unmatched. The battle pass is fair; the item shop is aggressive. The most-played F2P game in the world for a reason.
Halo Infinite
343's free-to-play Halo is the most accessible the franchise has ever been. The campaign is great, multiplayer is tight, and the Forge mode is a content-creation powerhouse. The cosmetic store took years to mature, but the core game is finally where it should be. The Halo we've wanted for a decade.
B-Tier: solid with friction
Call of Duty: Warzone
The 150-player BR has the best gunfeel in the genre, but the launch was rough and the meta swings have been brutal. Verdansk's return in 2025 was a masterstroke. The skill ceiling is high and the pay-to-skip-paywall is real. The best BR for casual players, the worst for competitive players.
Destiny 2
Bungie's looter-shooter is one of the deepest games ever made, but the "free" version is a demo — real content is locked behind expansions ($40-100 per year). The gunplay is best-in-class, the raids are legendary, and the seasonal model has stabilized. Pay to play what's free to demo.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
The BR that started it all. Gunplay is more realistic than Apex or Fortnite, the map design is better, and the tactical depth is higher. The graphics are dated, the optimization is poor, and the learning curve is steep. Still a great game, but it shows its age.
C-Tier: fun in bursts
The Division Resurgence
Ubisoft's mobile-first looter-shooter has the same cover-based combat as the console version, but the free-to-play mobile model adds aggressive monetization. Worth a try if you're on mobile and love the genre.
Fall Guys
The original battle royale party game is still the best casual multiplayer experience for non-shooter fans. Mini-game variety is great, but the skill ceiling is low and the seasonal updates have slowed. The best "5 minutes of chaos" game ever made.
D-Tier: niche or aging
World of Tanks
Wargaming's 14-year-old tank shooter has a deep tactical game hidden under a pay-to-progress monetization wall. The core gameplay is excellent, but the grind is real and the free players are second-class citizens. For the dedicated armor-history enthusiast only.
