Genshin Impact beginner guide — 10 tips for new Travelers
New to Teyvat? These 10 tips cover resin management, team building, exploration priorities, and the mistakes that waste your first 40 hours.

Genshin Impact is the most generous gacha game ever made — and also the most overwhelming. Four nations, 80+ characters, elemental reactions, and a resin system that gates your progress. Here's how to not waste your first week.
Tip 1: Don't rush Adventure Rank
The story is the best part of Genshin. Don't speedrun Archon Quests to hit AR45 faster. Explore, do side quests, and let the world breathe. The endgame will wait for you.
Tip 2: Understand resin before you farm
Resin is your daily energy currency. You get 160 per day (one every 8 minutes). Before AR45, spend it on:
- Ley Lines (Mora and XP books) — always useful
- Talent books — for your main team's abilities
- Weapon materials — for your best weapons
After AR45, spend ALL resin on artifact domains. Guaranteed 5-star drops.
Tip 3: Build one team first, not four
New players spread resources across 8+ characters. Don't. Pick four characters with good elemental synergy and max them. A focused team clears everything; a spread team clears nothing efficiently.
Tip 4: Elemental reactions are the game
The damage system revolves around reactions:
- Vaporize (Hydro + Pyro): 2x damage multiplier
- Melt (Pyro + Cryo): 2x or 1.5x depending on order
- Electro-Charged (Electro + Hydro): continuous AoE
- Freeze (Cryo + Hydro): crowd control
- Spread/Aggravate (Dendro + Electro): flat damage boost
Learn which reactions your team triggers and build around them.
Tip 5: Explore every waypoint
Fast travel is everything in an open world this big. Prioritize unlocking Statues of The Seven and teleport waypoints. The exploration rewards (Primogems, chests, oculi) fund your pulls.
Tip 6: Save Primogems for banner characters
Free Primogems add up to ~80-100 pulls per patch if you do dailies, events, and exploration. Don't spend on the standard banner. Wait for a character you actually want on the limited banner.
Tip 7: The Pity system is your friend
- 5-star pity: guaranteed at 90 pulls (soft pity starts at 74)
- 4-star pity: guaranteed at 10 pulls
- 50/50: first 5-star has a 50% chance to be the featured character. If you lose, the next 5-star is guaranteed featured.
Plan your pulls around pity. Never pull "just one more" without knowing where you stand.
Tip 8: Co-op unlocks at AR16
You can play with up to 3 friends once you hit Adventure Rank 16. Co-op makes domains easier and exploration more fun. Weekly bosses are significantly less painful with a team.
Tip 9: Don't neglect talent levels
Talents (normal attack, skill, burst) scale your damage more than artifacts in the early game. Level your main DPS talents to 8+ before obsessing over artifact substats.
Tip 10: The Spiral Abyss is optional
Floors 9-12 of the Spiral Abyss are the hardest content in the game. They reset every two weeks and offer 600 Primogems per full clear. If you can't clear them, you're not missing much — the rewards are modest compared to exploration.
