Honkai: Star Rail beginner guide — 8 tips before you warp

Welcome aboard the Astral Express

Honkai: Star Rail is the most accessible turn-based RPG on the market, but it still has systems that will confuse you early. Here's what actually matters in your first week.

Tip 1: Trailblaze Power is your daily currency

You get 240 Trailblaze Power per day. Spend it on:

  • Calyx (Golden) — credits, always needed
  • Calyx (Crimson) — character XP materials
  • Cavern of Corrosion — relic farming (only after you have a full team)

Don't let it cap. It regenerates whether you play or not.

Tip 2: Build one team of four, not eight characters

Spread resources thin and everyone stays weak. Pick four characters with complementary roles:

  • 1 DPS (main damage dealer)
  • 1 Support (buffs/debuffs)
  • 1 Sustain (healer or shielder)
  • 1 Flex (second DPS or utility)

Free characters like the Trailblazer, Natasha, and March 7th form a solid core.

Tip 3: Light cones matter more than you think

Light cones are Star Rail's "weapons." A good 4-star light cone on your DPS does more than you'd expect. Don't feed your best ones to level up others.

Tip 4: Learn the break system

Every enemy has a toughness bar. Hitting their weakness element breaks them — they lose their turn, take bonus damage, and get a status effect. This is the core of combat. Always check enemy weaknesses before selecting your team.

Tip 5: Speed is the most important stat

Turn order is everything in a turn-based game. Characters with higher speed act more often. Bronya and Sparkle are meta-defining because they manipulate turn order. Prioritize speed on your supports.

Tip 6: Use auto-battle for grinding, manual for bosses

Auto-battle handles Calyx farming and trash mobs. Switch to manual for bosses and endgame content — you'll need to time your breaks and bursts.

Tip 7: Save your Stellar Jades

You earn roughly 60-80 pulls per patch as F2P. Don't spend on the standard banner. Wait for limited character banners you actually want. The 50/50 pity system rewards patience.

Tip 8: The Simulated Universe is free rewards

Run the Simulated Universe weekly — it gives you relics, light cone materials, and currency. It's the best passive reward source in the game.

Free forever

Everything in Star Rail's story and endgame is clearable with free characters. The gacha speeds up collection, not progress.
