Path of Exile vs Lost Ark — which free ARPG should you play in 2026?

The ARPG dilemma

You want a free action RPG with deep loot systems, satisfying combat, and hundreds of hours of content. Two games dominate the space: Path of Exile and Lost Ark. Both are free. Both are excellent. But they're fundamentally different games.

Complexity: PoE wins by a mile

Path of Exile's passive skill tree has 1,300+ nodes. The gem system lets you socket support gems into skill gems, creating thousands of build combinations. The atlas endgame has 100+ maps with individual modifiers.

Lost Ark's skill system is more traditional — pick a class, level your skills, equip tripods. The engraving system adds build depth, but it's a fraction of PoE's complexity.

Verdict: If you want to theorycraft for hours, PoE. If you want to play without a spreadsheet, Lost Ark.

Combat feel: Lost Ark is more satisfying

Lost Ark's combat is punchy, animated, and visceral. Every class has distinct identity animations. The isometric camera gives you full battlefield awareness.

PoE's combat is functional but less flashy. The skill system is deeper, but the moment-to-moment feel is less rewarding. You're optimizing numbers more than executing combos.

Verdict: Lost Ark for game feel. PoE for build depth.

Endgame: PoE has no ceiling

Path of Exile's endgame is effectively infinite:

  • 100+ atlas maps with tiered difficulty
  • Uber bosses that require specific gear and knowledge
  • Heist, Delve, Expedition, and Ritual as side content
  • League mechanics that rotate every 3 months

Lost Ark's endgame is more structured:

  • Guardian Raids (weekly boss fights)
  • Abyssal Dungeons (weekly group content)
  • Legion Raids (8-player raids, the true endgame)
  • Thaemine and Echidna as the current ceiling

Verdict: PoE for infinite replayability. Lost Ark for structured weekly content.

Monetization: both are fair, differently

Path of Exile: Cosmetic-only shop. Stash tabs are the only "convenience" purchase (~$10-20 total for a comfortable setup). Zero gameplay advantages for sale.

Lost Ark: More aggressive. Royal Crystals buy convenience items, inventory expansions, and some progression accelerators. Not pay-to-win, but the cash shop is more present.

Verdict: PoE is the gold standard for F2P fairness. Lost Ark is fine but more tempting.

Time investment: Lost Ark is more respectful

PoE demands 100+ hours before you're "caught up" in a league. The learning curve is a wall. You will die. A lot. The wiki is your best friend.

Lost Ark gets you to endgame in ~40-50 hours. The story carries you, and the combat is accessible from minute one. You can play casually and still progress.

Verdict: Lost Ark for casual players. PoE for the committed.
