CS2 Operation Breakthrough is live — overhauled Premier mode and three new maps
CS2's newest operation overhauls Premier matchmaking, ships three new competitive maps, and reworks the weekly drop system. Here's what changes for ranked and casual play.

Operation Breakthrough
Counter-Strike 2's newest operation, "Breakthrough," is live. The patch is the most significant in the post-Operation-Aurora cycle: a Premier mode overhaul, three new competitive maps, and a reworked weekly drop system that finally makes the pass worth grinding.
Premier mode overhaul
Premier gets the biggest change in the patch. The new structure replaces the round-by-round CS Rating display with a per-map performance score that updates after every match. The intent is to reduce the noise from short losing streaks and give players a more stable rating.
The new flow:
- Pick your map before queueing. You choose from the active competitive pool.
- Play 10 placement games at the start of a new season.
- Earn rating per match based on your team's performance relative to the opponent's expected score on that map.
- Climb to the next division when your rating crosses the threshold.
The map-pick-before-queue flow means the meta for which maps are "worth grinding" will shift. If you main Inferno, the queue is yours. If you main Vertigo, expect longer queues.
New competitive maps
Three new maps join the competitive pool:
- Ravine — a 5v5 mid-control map with a vertical center. New smoke lineups are still being discovered.
- Cobblestone Reworked — back in the active pool with a less open A site. Easier smokes, harder flanks.
- Calavera — a smaller 5v5 map designed for shorter match lengths. Drops the round count from 30 to 20.
The Calavera format is the most interesting change. Shorter matches mean the rating volatility per game is higher, but the season grind is also shorter. Expect most Premier players to gravitate to Calavera first.
Weekly drop system
The old operation pass was a 100-level grind with cosmetics locked behind weekly challenges. The new system:
- Free track — 25 weekly drops, all of them player cards and stickers. Enough to fill a basic inventory.
- Premium track — 50 drops, including 3 knife skins, 4 glove skins, and a mix of weapon cases. $14.99.
- Weekly missions — refreshed every Monday, with five missions instead of three. Completing all five gives bonus drops.
The premium pass is a better value than previous operations if you actually play every week. If you're a casual player (under 5 games a week), the free track is roughly equivalent to the previous free pass.
What to play first
For ranked players, the immediate priority is the new Premier placement games. Your first 10 games set the baseline for the rest of the season.
For casual players, Calavera is the standout new map. The shorter format is ideal for a quick session after work, and the rating changes are more impactful per match.
