Counter-Strike 2 review: the purest competitive FPS, finally free

The verdict

Counter-Strike 2 is the purest competitive shooter in gaming. The gunplay is the tightest in the genre, the smokes are the most realistic ever shipped, and the ranked ladder is the most disciplined. The 2023 free-to-play switch made it more accessible than ever — even if Prime status is now the real paywall. If you want to test your aim and game sense against the best players in the world, CS2 is still the answer.

What works

Gunplay is the foundation. The recoil patterns are learnable, the time-to-kill is fast but not instant, and one-taps feel earned. The transition to Source 2 in 2023 brought volumetric smokes that actually block vision (the old "smokes" were sprites you could see through at certain angles) and subtick timing that rewards precise input. The result is a game where every shot is a decision.

The economy is the second pillar. Win rounds, buy better guns. Lose rounds, save money, force-buy into an eco round. The CS economy is the most strategically deep in any shooter — every round is a resource calculation, not just a firefight. Watching pro CS2 is watching teams make these calculations in real time.

The skin economy is a third pillar. The CS skin market is bigger than most AAA games' total revenue. Karambit, M4A4 Howl, AWP Asiimov — these are collector items, not cosmetics. The fact that skins hold real-world value (sometimes thousands of dollars) is a quirk of the market, not a design choice, but it does mean the game supports a massive third-party economy that keeps players engaged even when they're not playing.

What doesn't

Prime status is the real paywall. CS2 went free-to-play in 2023, but the non-Prime experience is significantly worse: lower-priority matchmaking queues, separate ranked ladder, no Operation rewards, and a higher concentration of cheaters. Prime is $14.95 — not a lot, but enough that "free CS2" is a half-truth. Anyone serious about the game buys Prime within their first month.

The community can be brutal. CS2's ranked ladder is the most disciplined in gaming, which means low-rank players get absolutely rolled. The "smurf" problem is real — experienced players create alt accounts to stomp lower ranks. New players should expect to lose a lot before they win anything.

The learning curve is steep. 100+ hours in, you start to understand utility lineups. 500+ hours in, you start to anticipate enemy positions. 1000+ hours in, you start to be competitive at Master Guardian. The skill curve is longer than any other popular shooter. Players who want a quick win should look elsewhere.

Should you play it?

Yes — but with the right expectations. Buy Prime on day one. Find a 3-5 stack to queue with. Accept that the first 200 hours are a tax, not the actual game. If you make it past that, you'll be hooked. CS2 is the only shooter that gets more rewarding the better you get at it, and that doesn't change as you climb.
