Path of Exile 3.27 Afflictions league launches — new torment mechanic, 12 new skills, Atlas rework
Path of Exile 3.27 Afflictions league launches with a new torment mechanic, 12 new skills, and an Atlas rework. Here's how the new league works and what to play first.

League 3.27 Afflictions is live
Path of Exile 3.27 "Afflictions" launched on Friday, and it's a major league with a new core mechanic, 12 new skills, an Atlas rework, and the usual balance pass. The new mechanic is the most interesting design the game has shipped in the last two years.
New mechanic: Torment
Torment is the new league mechanic. Monsters in maps and the campaign now have a Torment modifier that buffs them when you damage them — but the modifier is broken by inflicting specific ailments. The cycle:
- Engage a Tormented monster — they have a visible debuff icon.
- Inflict ailments — shock, chill, freeze, ignite, bleed, or poison all "stack" against the Torment debuff.
- Break the Torment — at 100 ailment stacks, the Torment debuff is removed, and the monster drops a Tormented Soul.
- Collect Tormented Souls — each soul gives you a stacking buff (+5% damage, +3% movement speed, etc.) for the rest of the map.
The interesting twist: the Torment debuff scales with map tier. Red-tier maps have Torment debuffs that require multiple ailment types to break, not just a single one. This pushes players to build characters that can apply multiple ailments, not just one.
For league-start builds, the early favorites are:
- Bleed Glad — the standard bleed Gladiator is even stronger this league because bleeds are an easy ailment to apply.
- Cold DoT Occultist — chill and freeze stack quickly against Torment debuffs.
- Poison Pathfinder — poison is the highest-stack-rate ailment, and Pathfinder's movement speed buffs synergize with the soul collection.
12 new skills
The skill balance pass ships with 12 new skills and a major rework of 8 existing skills. The new skills are mostly support gems and brand new active skills:
- Volatility (active) — fires a projectile that gains damage as it travels, but consumes a charge for each enemy it hits. Strong for single-target bossing.
- Siphon (active) — drains life from enemies in an area, but you take a percentage of the damage as self-damage. High risk, high reward.
- Withering Step (support) — adds a stacking wither effect to your movement skills. Synergizes with the new Torment mechanic.
- Soul Thief (active) — collects all the Tormented Souls in an area, but you lose 5% of your maximum life for each one. A gamble skill.
The new skills are designed to interact with the Torment mechanic, not replace the existing meta. Most of the strongest skills from 3.26 are still strong in 3.27.
Atlas rework
The Atlas gets a major rework this league. The new structure:
- Voidstones are gone — the Atlas is now a single tree with 8 keystones, similar to the old Atlas pre-3.0.
- Atlas Memories are the new Atlas currency. You earn them by completing maps, and you spend them on Atlas passives.
- Atlas passives are now a single tree with 4 branches (one per endgame system: maps, heists, bosses, etc.).
The rework is designed to make Atlas progression feel less like a checklist. Instead of farming specific map types, you pick a branch of the Atlas tree and progress through it.
League-start advice
If you're starting a new character for the league:
- Pick a build that can apply multiple ailments. The Torment debuff stacks faster with multi-ailment builds.
- Don't skip the campaign. The first 3 acts are easier than usual this league, and the Torment mechanic is more rewarding in campaign than in maps.
- Save your Tormented Souls for tough content. The souls are a stacking buff, but they reset between maps. Hoard them for the boss fights.
