Overwatch 2 Season 18 Stadium overhaul — hero bans, the new Healer meta, and ranked changes

Season 18 is live

Overwatch 2 Season 18 dropped this week with three major changes: a full Stadium mode overhaul, hero bans in ranked, and a competitive ladder reset. The patch is the most significant gameplay change since the Stadium mode launched.

Stadium mode overhaul

Stadium gets a complete rework this season. The mode is now a 5v5 mode with the following changes:

  • Items are now persistent across matches — you keep your loadout between games, but items are level-gated to your current account level.
  • Hero items are unique per hero — no more sharing items across heroes. Each hero has its own item pool.
  • The Stadium is now a 3-round format — first to 2 wins. Matches are faster, ~12 minutes.
  • New Stadium-only hero variants — some heroes get a Stadium-specific kit that differs from their Quick Play kit. Ana gets a damage-focused variant, Reinhardt gets a knockback-focused variant.

The persistent items are the biggest change. If you've built a full item loadout on Ana, you don't lose it when you switch to Kiriko. This makes Stadium feel more like a progression mode than a one-off match.

Hero bans in ranked

Ranked gets a new feature: hero bans. Each team can ban one hero from the enemy team before the match starts. The ban phase:

  1. Each team nominates 3 heroes to ban at the start of the match.
  2. The system randomly selects 1 ban per team from the nominations.
  3. The match proceeds with the standard hero select, minus the banned heroes.

The bans are independent — your team's ban doesn't affect the other team's bans. This means a single match can have up to 2 heroes banned.

The most-banned heroes in the first week of Season 18:

  • D.Va — her new mobility buffs make her a ban priority at high rank.
  • Ana — the anti-heal from her biotic grenade is too strong in the current meta.
  • Tracer — the pulse bomb damage buff makes her too dangerous to leave unbanned.

If you main a high-ban-rate hero, expect longer queue times this season.

Healer meta

The healer meta gets a meaningful shakeup. Mercy, Kiriko, and Ana are all adjusted:

  • Mercy — damage boost increased by 8%, healing decreased by 5%. The goal is to push Mercy toward a damage-boost playstyle rather than a pure healbot.
  • Kiriko — Protection Suzu cooldown increased by 2 seconds. The cleanse is still strong, but the cooldown means she can't spam it.
  • Ana — biotic grenade duration increased by 1 second. The anti-heal is more oppressive in team fights.

The meta is pushing toward a more aggressive healer playstyle. Pure healbot Mercy is no longer optimal. If you main Mercy, expect the next two weeks to feel rough as you adapt.

Ranked reset

The seasonal reset puts every player at the start of a new climb. The competitive points you earned last season are converted to legacy points that don't reset. Your MMR is reset to the baseline, and your rank is set based on your placement games.

The standard advice applies:

  1. Don't chase your old rank in your first 5 games.
  2. Warm up in Quick Play before queuing ranked.
  3. Play the meta heroes for your first 10 games. The placement games have a higher impact on your starting rank.

What to queue first

  • Stadium fans: The new mode is the standout change. Jump in.
  • Competitive players: The hero bans change how every match plays. Get your placements in early to feel out the new ban meta.
  • Casual players: The Stadium persistent items are the best progression change. The game now has something to grind for outside of ranked.
