S-Tier: the genre-defining strategy game
Neverwinter
The D&D-licensed MMO-strategy hybrid. The campaign is fully real-time with pause, the endgame has 4-man dungeons and 10-man raids, and the strategic depth comes from character builds, not just combat.
The 2026 update added a new campaign chapter and a new endgame mode. The community is smaller than the 2014 peak, but the dedicated player base is welcoming.
A-Tier: excellent with caveats
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game
CD Projekt's standalone Gwent. The 2026 update brought the full single-player campaign mode and the new seasonal ranked ladder. The card art is excellent, the mechanics are deep, and the F2P model is generous.
The catch: the ranked ladder is small, and the meta is dominated by a handful of decks. If you can stomach the meta, Gwent is one of the best card games on PC.
Forge of Empires
The browser-based 4X strategy game that has survived for 10+ years. The progression is deep, the city-building is satisfying, and the era progression (Stone Age to Future) is unique in the genre.
The catch: the F2P model is heavy, and the endgame is gated behind paid eras. If you can stomach the grind, Forge of Empires is one of the best browser strategy games.
Elvenar
The fantasy-themed browser city-builder. The progression is similar to Forge of Empires, but the fantasy setting and the trading system are unique. The 2026 update added a new race and a new chapter.
The catch: the F2P model is heavy, and the endgame is gated behind paid expansions. If you can stomach the grind, Elvenar is one of the best browser city-builders.
B-Tier: solid but with caveats
Kards
The WWII-themed card game. The mechanics are unique (combining land, infantry, and air units), the art is excellent, and the F2P model is generous. The 2026 update added a new faction and a new ranked season.
The catch: the player base is smaller than Hearthstone or Gwent, and the ranked ladder can take a while to find matches.
Town of Salem 2
The social deduction game. The mechanics are deep, the social play is unmatched, and the F2P model is fully free. The 2026 update added a new role list and a new ranked mode.
The catch: the game is social-deduction, which means it's not for everyone. If you enjoy social play, Town of Salem 2 is one of the best social games on PC.
Game of Thrones Winter Is Coming
